What a patient information system is

A patient information system (PIS) is the organisational layer above a single clinical application: it describes how patient data is captured, stored, shared, secured and used across departments — registration, clinical care, diagnostics, pharmacy, imaging, finance and reporting.

Buyers sometimes confuse PIS with an EHR alone. The EHR holds clinical truth; the patient information system ensures that truth is consistent everywhere — no duplicate indexes, no overnight CSV bridges, no “official record” in three products.
